SUPPLEMENTS GUIDE TO BRAIN AGING, MEMORY AND COGNITION

Brain processing power and memory are considered to peak at the age of 18. With age, multiple factors including inflammation and changes in neurotransmitters lead to weakening of the memory. This is a natural process that happens to everyone.

HOW TO SELECT THE BEST MEMORY AND BRAIN SUPPORT NUTRIENTS?

One can get lost in the wide range of ingredients available to support the brain and its function. I use two criteria for my selection:

1) is the ingredient essential to normal functioning or not and

2) are there clinical studies reviewing its effectiveness?

Based on these criteria, three ingredients stand out: Choline, Serine and Bacopa Monnieri. Choline and Serine are required by the brain to function normally, while Bacopa Monnieri seems to be the most effective non-essential ingredient to support memory.

CHOLINE, SERINE AND BACOPA MONNIERI

Choline and Serine meet both criteria #1 (required for the normal functioning ) and #2 (examined in human studies). They are phospholipids that become critically important for the brain as we age, that is why they are my #1 choice.

Choline is an essential nutrient required for brain and nervous system health, cell structure and messaging, DNA synthesis and metabolism, among others. The best source of choline is Alpha GPC; it stands out among other choline sources due to its superior absorption and choline levels. You can learn more about choline in the ultimate guide to choline supplements.

Phosphatidylserine is the best source of serine, a component of cell membranes. It supports neurons in the brain for memory and neuroplasticity.

Bacopa Monnieri meets only criterion #2 (examined in human studies). It is my #2 choice, way ahead of the rest of brain support supplements, as it is the best nootropic for memory support. According to studies, Bacopa Monnieri requires at least 8-12 weeks of continued supplementation for its memory benefits.

THREE SUPPLEMENT TIPS

1) I recommend choosing Alpha GPC and Phosphatidylserine from soy free sources, even if one is not allergic to soy. Both can be derived from sunflower lecithin from or soy lecithin. The extraction process from sunflowers involves cold press, while from soy – chemicals.

2) It is best to take Alpha GPC, Phosphatidylserine and especially Bacopa Monnieri with food to avoid upsetting the stomach.

3) If you are buying a supplement, my recommendation is to look also at the inactive ingredients. If the product is in a capsule, there is no need for inactive ingredients other than the capsule itself. Many brands, however, put other things inside: from fillers such as rice flour to what I consider as nasty ingredients such as silicon dioxide, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, maltodextrin, starch, etc.
